Sakaar

We can make a difference to a thousand lives only if we try. This is the spirit that created "Sakaar". Derived from Hindi, Sakaar means to realize, fulfill or achieve – and it is the Extentia way of making a difference to the world today.

Our mission is simple – create social awareness in our city, help the underprivileged and provide support to charitable institutions. Through ‘Sakaar’ Extentia aims to offer a helping hand and hopes to bring a smile to people's faces.

Brief Background

The first program initiated by Sakaar on 31st December 2001 was a food-donation drive at the Mother Teresa Home, undertaken in collaboration with the Sadhu Vaswani Mission.

Sakaar is currently responsible for executing social projects on an ongoing basis – by working with individuals and similar external organizations, Sakaar is able to extend its reach and participate in a wide range of activities.

Sakaar is an entirely voluntary organization – staffed, managed and overseen by Extentians, Sakaar is funded by Extentia, and select customers and partners who share Sakaars ideal and see it as an effective tool in furthering their social agendas. While the overall objectives for Sakaar have been laid down in the initial charter, specific activities are the result of the operating volunteers decisions and current priorities.

Several successful and rewarding efforts, some of which are mentioned below, have reinforced our belief in the value of looking out for the interests of the communities that we live and work in.

Fun events for orphaned girls

As part of our ongoing initiatives the Sakaar team organized a fun filled evening for about two hundred girl students at a local orphanage.

The evening started with a magic show, lots of games and a dance program for the children. Later in the evening we distributed snacks, gifts and prizes. The excited little children were quite a handful but just playing and interacting with them was a pleasure that made the evening extremely fulfilling. They had so much to offer in terms of appreciation and love - feelings that the team at Extentia will cherish for a long time to come.

Assistance to National Association for the Blind

Sakaar regularly assists the National Association for the Blind (NAB), a home for the aging blind, by ordering a number of items made by the NAB residents. Every year, a large number of employees from Extentia order items like dusters, table cloths, sweaters, candles, etc. and proudly collect respectable sums of money on behalf of NAB.

Wagholi Ashram

Besides organizing charities and donations for special occasions throughout the year, Sakaar makes sure to provide help on a long-term basis.

Sakaar has also garnered resources for the Wagholi Ashram which houses and educates over 350 abandoned and orphaned children, so that they receive their regular supplies of vegetables and milk on a sustained basis.

Facilitating the Girl Child Program

Education is one of the focus areas for Sakaar. In association with the Soroptimist International Club of Poona, Sakaar has sponsored the education for 6 girls under their "Girl Child Program".

Sakaar also sponsors the education of Extentia’s kitchen assistant and his brother, allowing them to resume their previously aborted studies. These young individuals would not otherwise have been able to afford a basic education, though they are very ambitious and keen to educate themselves post work hours.

In support of World AIDS Day

In recognition and support of World AIDS Day on December 1st, several Extentians took time to participate in the “Race against AIDS” - a charity run to spread social awareness about HIV/AIDS. The AIDS Charity Run was part of the 21st Pune International Marathon held on Sunday, 26th November 2006.

World Aids Day was also a reason for the Sakaar members to do a good deed for the HIV affected community in Pune. Sakaar along with Deep Griha, an independent charitable organization, organized the ‘Disha Cricket Tournament’ and sponsored the prizes for the winners. The ‘Extentians were happy to be able to give the slum youth an opportunity to interact with the ‘Corporate World’- a world outside their own.

Sakaar also organized a presentation by Deep Griha on ‘AIDS Awareness’ for all the Extentians. This truly sensitized the employees of Extentia and cleared many myths about HIV and AIDS.

Celebrating Diwali with a cause

Diwali is the festival of lights and the most celebrated festival in India. Extentia celebrated this Diwali with a cause – by hosting a party for about forty children from the less privileged sections of society. The children were from varied backgrounds, all cared for by ‘Deep Griha’ – an independent charitable organization working to better the lives of underprivileged residents of our city.

Extentians organized an exiting evening for the children complete with an impromptu singing and dancing session, painting of diyas (clay lamps), a fireworks display and an evening snack for the children.

All the kids took back little gifts and fun memories of the evening, but what they left behind, was a warm glow that lasted all season long!

Carol singing at Christmas

Every Christmas, Sakaar volunteers go carol singing to old age homes like the Sandhya Old Age Home and the Isha Prema Ashram. After singing a few carols (mostly off-tune but with a lot of enthusiasm) the Extentians play a few games with the residents and then treat them to some Christmas goodies to bring smiles to their aging faces.

The above-mentioned events are only a small extract of Sakaar’s ongoing activities. Besides long-term projects that we follow on a regular basis, there are new projects coming up every year that are given our support.

Despite busy schedules and tight deadlines, Extentians make and dedicate time and effort for a noble social cause. It’s an overwhelming experience to be a part of the Sakaar team and a wonderful opportunity offered to us to make that special difference we can.
