The 2022 Beginners Guide to LGBTQ+ Inclusion in the Workplace

What does LGBTQ+ refer to?

Conversations around sexual orientations have always existed, even though they might seem new to some. The acronym has been experiencing constant changes and expansion as the world is moving toward accepting more sexual orientations.

LGBTQ+ refers to the community of people that identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (or questioning). The "+" at the end symbolizes inclusivity of other sexual orientations and variations in sex characteristics that are not cisgender or heterosexual or do not fall within female/male biological binaries. Using appropriate terminology and naming is the first step toward ensuring inclusive representation of people's diverse identities.

The benefits of LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace

With a growing population of people who identify themselves as members of the LGBTQ+ community, global businesses are determined to implement measures that foster a culture of inclusivity and diversity. According to the Human Rights Campaign Annual Corporate Equality Index 2018, which rates employers on their comprehensive policies, benefits, and practices within their business, 609 businesses had earned a 100 percent rating. What exactly were they doing differently? When we think about bringing inclusivity to the workplace, there is one keyword - openness.

Even though there has been a fundamental shift, there are still members of LGBTQ+ who still feel closeted at work. Adobe has been an ardent supporter of Pride activities throughout the summer. They have held discussions, networking events, and fund-raising activities in their quest to uplift employees who identify themselves with this community.

Building an effective LGBTQ+ network within organizations that have clear aims, responsibilities, and support from leaders at the management level can be vital in allowing everyone to participate without feeling the need to 'out' themselves. Promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion is an ever-evolving journey, not something that will happen overnight. It is both a process and a goal, which needs to be addressed through training and delineating the expectations. LGBTQ+ diversity training will benefit members of the community by greater participation in day-to-day activities and treating them with dignity and respect.
