Extentia Breakfast Talk: Unraveling Media

Dr. Keval Kumar an adjunct professor at Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA), former Director, Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication (SIMC), and a former reader and chair, Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Pune spoke at Extentia’s breakfast talk on August 1. He began with the history of media and spoke of legacy and non-legacy newspapers. The conversation progressed to modern news channels, and their working model comprising of paid news and targeted marketing.
Dr. Kumar laid emphasis on media literacy and has pioneered its incorporation as a subject in schools and colleges. According to him, it is important to develop a media consciousness, and ask the right questions about the news people are exposed too. GDPR’s effect on social media was also spoken of – it’s effort to impose order, and the far-reaching consequences it will have on IT giants. The session concluded with a clip featuring some of the first films bringing the audience back to the beginning – the legacy and growth of all forms of media.
